I was hoping to throw all the ingredients together but I’ve seen videos where the meat is cooked first then added to the crock pot with veggies. Does it really have to be done this way?? Thank you.

Well, it doesn’t need to be cooked, but it’s better if you brown it first. Builds layers of flavour, and meat doesn’t get caramelized in a slow cooker.
What I do is cube a roast of beef, dredge it in seasoned flour then brown it (in batches, on med-high heat), then also soften some onion & garlic on the stove before tossing it all in the slow-cooker with allspice, thyme, beef stock, tomato paste, maybe a cubed potato and/or carrot, and a bay leaf. Cook for 6 hours on low (time varies a lot by how new your crock pot is and how much you’re making) and in the last 10-15 minutes add green beans or peas.
You can find tons of slow-cooker recipes here: http://slowandsimple.com/

people are coming over, and i don’t have time to thaw it. Thawing in the microwave ruins the meat.

I know my mother has often taken roast out of the freezer and she put it in a tub of COLD water for like 1/2 an hour and even though it was still frozen a bit, she’d put it in. Most crock pots have a 1 or two option, just either put it on one and allow some additional time, or on two- but keep in mind that the two setting you will need to check on it sooner rather than later. and if you are talking about those onion soup mix pouches, then yes, that will taste fine. You are not the first to do so, and it tastes lovely, so go for it.
So take out you roast and set it in cold water (wrapped) for about 1/2 hour. If you choose to skip this, I have no doubt it will still work, just cut into your roast to check if it is ready, or in a few hours, cut it in half to reduce cook time and increase deliciousness.
water + soup mix + I would add some garlic powder if you had it and some black pepper – trust me.
-Do not ass salt as roast is already salty, and onion soup mix is as well.
I recommend, if you are able, putting it on the 2 setting for a few hours than switching down, or if you are cooking on the 1 setting ,to cut it in half before you take off. And that’s it!

I am looking to make the pot roast my mom used to make in a crock pot: meat, carrots, potatoes and onions (and a small amount of water as needed–only! no gravy, tomatoes in juice or soup), but I am not sure on what temp or for how long, or with how much water, I should let it cook. I know she always let it slow cook, but I’m open to your suggestions. Thanks!

Simply. Pot roast is a braised dish and braising meat is easy. Brown the meat in a pan on the stove. Transfer the meat to a crockpot and add the rest of the stuff. Just cook it on low. Keep adding water as needed so that it does not dry out. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

To check it to see if its done, stick a chef’s fork or knife through the meat. It should be very tender. I don’t have an exact time because that depends on the crockpot and the size of the roast and how tough it was in the first place. The key to braising is to cook it long, slow and low. Just make sure all the water doesn’t evaporate. Keep adding water if it needs more.

Hi Aries Moon, I am fairly sure that your meat will be done in the time that you gave it. Especially as you say it was tender and fell apart both good signs that it is ready to eat. The meat will not colour the same as an oven roast because it has been immersed in liquid and will not colour as I said. If you have ever eaten a slice of salt beef you will remember that this would have looked pink (ish) in colour. I hope this helps, all the best. rab

I was wondering if I throw some in a crock pot with some bbq sauce, would they be just as good? If not please tell me how to get them like my mom did. Thanks!

Absolutely do this. I fix mine that way all the time. I add my ribs to the crockpot with some water and let them cook on low about 6 hours. I then drain off the water and add my barbeque sauce and let them go on high about another hour or so. I have found that if I add the barbeque sauce at the beginning it can sometimes burn or get way too thin.

Oh I have to agree with the crock pot answers. We love our with ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and chopped onions. I mix all the ingredients together, without the pork, in a bowl. Only put half the mix on the pork because it will get runny. When the meat is finished I drain it then add the mix that I didn’t cook it in. This is perfect with mashed potatoes and corn or you can have shredded pork sandwiches. YUMMM!!!

I am cooking a chili in my crock pot and I was wondering if I need to cook the beef on the stove before I put it in the crock pot or can I just let it cook in the crock pot?

Ground beef or beef chunks?

If you’re using chunks of beef you should sear it first. You don’t need to cook it, but that sear will add a LOT of great flavor later. In fact, sear it good in a non-nonstick (you want stickage) pan, and when you’re done, deglaze with some beer or water and put that liquid right in the crock pot.

With ground beef you do want to brown it and drain the fat. You can do that later, but it’s easier to do it first.
