How much water should I put in Crock Pot to make a pot roast?

June 10th, 2012

I have a 5 quart Crock Pot and I want to make a roast with it, but I’m not sure how much water to put with it.

I always fill it til it just covers it, using a mixture of beef broth and water. If you put water in only part way, the top half dries out and isn’t as tender.
I also throw in a tablespoon or so of vinegar (any kind) – doesn’t make it sour, but it helps tenderize it.

Cover the roast 1/3 of the way. I would recommend beef broth versus water. Then you would have a better liquid to make a sauce or gravy with.

You do not need alot of liquid, because you will get plenty of juices from the meat itself…just enough liquid to create some steam. I’ve made an excellent pot roast with nothing more than 1 can of cream of mushroom soup. It turns into a nice gravy. Or you could use 1 cup of beef broth (if you have a packet of onion soup mix, throw it in).

1 Cup of water should be plenty. Personally, I like to use 1/2 cup red wine and 1/2 cup of water or broth (if I have it in the house).

I never put any liquid in my crock pot unless I cook something like a chicken then I used chicken broth. For pot roast I use no water it could dry it out if you do.

Use Beef Stock/Broth instead of water.

    About 1 can.

I always put beef broth in the crock pot that covers the roast. I have always put hard veggies like carrots or celery under the roast so the liquid will be on all sides and will cook from all side at the same rate. I also do use balsamic vinegar in the broth to tenderize the meat a little more.

P.S. Try a tea spoon of ground mustard in the pot roast its yummy.

That depends. Do you want a lot of juice to put over it, like a stew, or do you want just a little juice to put over it.

I usually fill mine up so that it just covers the roast, which is usually about 2/3 of the way.
