How to cook ribs in a crock pot?

January 18th, 2012

I have boneless spare ribs. Do I have to brown them first or just put them in the crock pot as is and add sauce over them?

Thanks

you can do either. browning will seal in most of the juices. Make sure you have at least a cup of liquid on the bottom , water, broth or what ever…in addition to your sauce..

    There is a recipe here:
    http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/crockpot-spare-ribs.htm

It says to boil them for a short time, then brown them. This reduces the fat (boiling) and then adds extra flavor (browning).

I suppose you could put them straight in, but they may be a bit fatty and browning does add more flavor. Browing is almost always preferable for crockpot recipes, as it both adds flavor and seals in juices, preventing the meat from drying out or becoming soft.

I put ribs in the crockpot with BBQ sauce and cook until tender. The I put them in a pan with another flavor of sauce and place in a low oven just to dry them out a little. Turns out tender and juicy.
    Good luck

Browneye, I usually sear or brown them first, It’s the only time I brush them with a BBQ sauce before adding them to the crock pot, or my wife does. For the liquid we use a glass of red wine, usually a Cabinet, if we out of that a nice Shiraz.
